HISTORY

High School, Bukit Mertajam was in 1927, the first English secondary school in mainland Penang ( Province Wellesley ) that was built to cater for students who would otherwise have had to travel to the Penang Island for their lessons.

Mr. E. Stowell was the founder of this new English secondary school that was named the High School, Bukit Mertajam. Later, an English primary school was built adjacent to HSBM that was named Stowell Primary School after Mr. Stowell.

Initially, lessons were conducted in the school hall. Two years later, in 1929, an additional block, known as Block C, was built.

Between 1941 and 1945, the school was temporarily closed due to the Japanese Occupation in the Second World War because it was used in the war effort. Though bombs were discovered in the vicinity of the school, the school survived the war.

After 41 years, in 1970, the first Sixth Form class started for the Arts stream.

In 1971, again for the first time, the school offered Sixth Form classes for both Arts and Science streams. There were two science classes in 1971. One for students majoring in Biology and one for those majoring in Double Maths.

Since HSBM was the only school that offered Sixth Form studies in Province Wellesley, students from neighbouring secondary schools in the mainland came here for their Sixth From studies.

Most of the non HSBM students came from the local Convent and Jit Seng High School.

This HSBM school web site was developed and is maintained by the Sixth Formers of 1971 and 1972 who have always maintained a loving relationship since leaving the school in 1972.

One aim of this web site is to make former and present students aware of the role played by the teachers at HSBM to lay the foundations for a bright future.

It is their hope that this site will encourage other groups of former school mates to maintain the same loving relationship that the 1971/72 Sixth Formers have been fortunate to enjoy.

A second aim of this site is to offer daily good wishes, positive inspirations and articles that may help visitors to develop a positive outlook in life to find happiness and contentment.

The headmasters are the people who hold the reins of HSBM and lead it towards excellence. Headmasters have always been the topmost authority in the school and in most cases, passionate orators who mould and control the minds of the impressionable students.
